Obesity has become an epidemic in the United States. Defined as having a BMI of 30 or higher, the condition is present in over one third of the adult population and one sixth of children. If the current trend continues into the future, obesity will be the new normal and healthy weight the exception.
The biggest danger of obesity is the health issues it brings. Overweight people are more likely to develop chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure. Further complications of obesity are depression, arthritis and stroke. The bottom line is being too heavy usually leads to serious, long term health problems.
There is also the social stigma of being too heavy. Overweight people are considered to be less attractive and may find themselves ridiculed and socially isolated. This can lower self-esteem, and lead to depression and self loathing.
Diet plays a crucial role in the prevalence of obesity. Americans have developed a taste for fatty and sugary food that is loaded with empty calories. Once this type of food is consumed, the body breaks it down quickly, which leads to a big spike in blood sugar. Large amounts of insulin are secreted and the body soons feels hungry again, causing the person to eat even more at the next meal. Processed foods are also loaded with artificial colors and chemicals that the body is unable to use, and as a result get stored as fat.
Studies suggest the epidemic can be reversed by a switch toward more vegetarian eating habits. A diet made up of organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes is low in fat, high in nutrition and very satisfying. Real food, as opposed to processed food, takes longer to digest and this leads to less eating in the long run. Coupled with a program of moderate exercise, this type of diet can lead to weight loss without feelings of hunger or deprivation.
The United States is a leader in technology, science and medical research. It is also leading the world to edge of disaster with its obesity epidemic. An investment now to turn the health tide will go a long way to preserving the future for everyone.
