Exercising Ideas For People Who Don't Exercise

If you aren't familiar with exercising regularly, the thought of suddenly starting in a healthier direction can be incredibly daunting. There are countless opinions online and in print about how people should exercise, but the truth of the matter is a special approach is required for people who don't exercise regularly.

Don't overlook the basic necessities. Have plenty of water handy and wear clothing that is comfortable for you to move around in. You may also want to wear a pedometer so you can track your steps.

If you are unused to exercise, that means you probably become very winded after a small amount of activity. This is why the best exercise option is simple walking. It requires no special equipment and can be done outside or in the home. You can work in some interval training and make walking an easy way to exercise every day.

Here's a sample walking-based workout plan:

  • Walk at regular pace for five minutes

  • Speed walk for three minutes

  • Walk at regular pace for five minutes, alternating between pushing arms out in front of your body or over your head

  • Speed walk for three minutes

  • Walk at regular pace for five minutes
  • Another excellent exercise resource for people who don't exercise is a swimming pool. Water provides natural resistance that helps make even the simplest motions into a form of exercise. Even if you can't swim, walking laps around the shallow end of a pool is great cardiovascular exercise.

    An easy pool-based workout plan:

  • Walk fifteen laps around the shallow end of the pool

  • If you can't swim, hold onto a flotation device and practice treading water

  • Walk five laps around the shallow end, lifting the flotation device above your head every other step

  • If you focus on walking and utilizing the pool as you start your new exercise plan, you will build cardiovascular strength. You will become less winded and will find it easier for your heart rate to calm down after you finish your workout. This is tremendously beneficial to your health and can be accomplished without ever setting foot inside of a gym.

    As you progress, you can move to more advanced exercises utilizing dumbbells at home, gym equipment, and the like. Remember that if you're moving, you're exercising, and never underestimate the value of a simple walk.
